Outdoor Trip Planning Checklist

A reusable pre-trip check for destination research, conditions, gear, safety, and the final departure review.

Build a Detailed Plan

Trip basics

  • Confirm activity, destination, date, and expected duration
  • Identify the managing agency or landowner
  • Check permits, reservations, parking fees, and access hours
  • Share the route, vehicle, and return time with a trusted person
  • Choose a turnaround time before leaving home

Conditions and access

  • Review the current short-term forecast for the actual destination
  • Check wind, precipitation, heat, cold, snow, and overnight lows
  • Review road, trail, fire, smoke, avalanche, or water-condition updates
  • Confirm seasonal closures and recent trip reports when available
  • Download an offline map and save official contact information

Gear and supplies

  • Pack activity-specific essentials and verify critical gear works
  • Carry enough water plus a treatment or backup option
  • Pack food for the planned time plus an emergency margin
  • Bring navigation, illumination, communication, and first-aid supplies
  • Add weather layers and sun protection for changing conditions
  • Pack repair items for the highest-consequence gear failure

Final departure check

  • Charge phones, lights, GPS units, radios, and battery packs
  • Confirm fuel or vehicle charge and the route to the trailhead or launch
  • Recheck the forecast, closures, and alerts on departure day
  • Secure food, valuables, permits, keys, and identification
  • Leave enough time to turn around before darkness or worsening conditions
