Who operates this website
Western Mile operates the website and determines how information submitted directly to Western Mile is used. External services named below process information under their own terms and privacy practices.
Member accounts
If member accounts are enabled and you register, Western Mile uses Supabase to process the email address, encrypted password credentials, verification status, session data, and the public profile details you choose to provide. Public profile fields may include a display name, handle, home region, and short bio; the account email is not included in the public profile. Account information is used to provide secure access and, later, participation features. Supabase processes this information under its own privacy and security terms.
Account deletion and retention
A signed-in member can request permanent deletion from the account page after confirming the current password. Deletion removes the authentication record and profile data designed to cascade with it. Limited records may be retained when reasonably necessary for security, legal compliance, fraud prevention, dispute resolution, or backups. Public contributions are not enabled in this account-foundation release; their retention rules will be documented before community posting opens.
Account abuse prevention
When member accounts are enabled, public signup, sign-in, confirmation-resend, and password-recovery forms use Cloudflare Turnstile to help distinguish legitimate requests from automated abuse. Cloudflare may process browser, device, and network signals needed to provide that security check. The resulting one-time token is sent to Supabase for verification and is not used as a public profile field.
Checklist progress
Complete activity checklists save progress in the browser's local storage on the current device. Western Mile does not receive that checklist data. Clearing browser storage or using another device removes or separates the saved progress.
Locally saved trip plans
The active trip plan saves automatically in the browser on the current device so it can be continued later. It may include the selected activity, state, general planning area, public destination, trip dates, and optional day-by-day itinerary notes. Western Mile does not receive locally saved itinerary notes. Do not enter sensitive personal information. The planner's Start a new plan control removes the active saved choices from this device; clearing browser storage removes other locally saved planner progress.
Sharing is deliberate. The Share plan control creates a link containing the public planning choices and, when selected, the trip dates. The Share itinerary control also includes any day-by-day notes in the shared message, while the link itself contains only the public planning choices. Sharing uses the device share feature when available or copies the information to the clipboard. Anyone who receives shared information can read it.
Nearby destination search
The destination finder can rank results from a supported place or ZIP code you enter. Supported place coordinates are matched in the browser. A ZIP code is sent to a Western Mile server route, which requests approximate postal-area coordinates from the free Zippopotam.us service. Western Mile does not save the submitted ZIP code. The resulting coordinate is used only to rank destination results by approximate distance.
Weather requests
When a supported destination is selected, the website sends its internal location identifier to a Western Mile server route. The server requests forecast data from the National Weather Service using the destination coordinates. The browser does not send a precise device location to the National Weather Service.
Optional analytics
Google Analytics loads only when analytics is active and the visitor chooses to allow it. The preference is stored in local storage. Visitors can decline analytics and can reopen privacy settings from the footer.
External links
Forecast, retailer, affiliate, and other external links open services with their own privacy practices. Review the destination service's policies before providing information or completing a purchase.
Newsletter subscriptions
When Field Notes is enabled, newsletter signup details are sent through a Western Mile server route to Brevo for double-opt-in confirmation and list management. The form may include an email address, optional first name, activity and region preferences, consent status, and signup source. An address does not become active until the confirmation link is used. Each newsletter includes an unsubscribe option.
Email contact
Messages sent by email are handled through the selected email provider and are used to respond to the request, review corrections, or manage a relevant business inquiry. Do not send sensitive personal or payment information.
Interactive maps
Maps remain off until a visitor chooses to open one. They use the coordinates of a selected planning area or the approximate center returned for an entered ZIP code, not precise device-location history. Opening a map requests image tiles from the configured map provider, which receives normal request details such as the internet address, browser information, referring website, and the map tiles viewed under its own privacy terms. OpenStreetMap is the default tile source unless another provider is configured.
Retention
Local checklist, trip-plan, itinerary, stay, and gear-planning progress remains in the browser until the visitor clears it or replaces the applicable active plan. Analytics retention is controlled in the configured Google Analytics property. Newsletter information remains with Brevo until the subscription is removed or retention is otherwise required. Account information remains until deletion, subject to limited security, legal, fraud-prevention, dispute, and backup needs. Email correspondence may be retained while reasonably needed to respond, document a correction, or manage a related business record.
Privacy choices and requests
Visitors can decline optional analytics or reopen Privacy settings from the footer. Newsletter subscribers can unsubscribe from any campaign. Members can use available account controls to update or delete account information when accounts are enabled. Depending on where a visitor lives, applicable law may provide additional rights to request access, correction, deletion, or information about data use.
Send a privacy request through the contact page. Include enough information to identify the relevant interaction, but do not send passwords, payment data, or sensitive identification documents unless specifically requested through a secure process.
Children
Western Mile is a general-audience outdoor planning website and is not directed to children under 13. The website does not knowingly request account or newsletter information from children under 13. If such information is identified, it should be reported through the contact method so it can be reviewed and deleted when appropriate.
Security and policy changes
Reasonable technical and organizational safeguards are used for features controlled by Western Mile, but no online service can guarantee absolute security. This notice may change as services or legal requirements evolve. Material updates will be identified by changing the date at the top of this page.
