How to Choose a Camp Sleep System

A warm night comes from the bag, pad, clothing, shelter, and campsite working together. Buying the thickest mattress or the lowest temperature label separately can create an expensive system that still sleeps poorly.

The pad is part of the warmth rating

A sleeping bag reduces heat loss to the air, while the body compresses its underside. The pad must reduce heat loss to the ground. Thickness may improve comfort, but insulation—not thickness alone—controls much of the warmth.

Leave a realistic temperature margin

Temperature labels are not a guarantee of comfort. Individual metabolism, clothing, humidity, wind, shelter ventilation, and the pad all matter. Cold sleepers and shoulder-season campers should leave more margin rather than planning at the edge of a claim.
